Artur Krysiak, age 20
I wasn’t overly impressed at the Palace game at Tiverton. He does a lot of shouting though. He looks the part physically and he’s one to work on. I don’t seem him pushing Paul Jones straight away but hopefully he’ll progress.
Ben Hamer, age 23 (on loan to City from Reading)
Born in Taunton and brought up in Chard, Ben joined City on loan in January. He's quickly proved to be Tis's first choice keeper.
Paul Jones, age 24 (on loan at P'boro)
Definite first choice to start, but he’s got real competition. Kicking is always going to be something people pick up on and he could probably still be more commanding in his area. His shot-stopping is an obvious strong point.
Andy Marriott, age 39 (now in a coaching role at West Brom)
He’s obviously there for his experience and, as he proved last year, he’s certainly capable of stepping in when needed. He’s still a quality player, but as everyone knows age is against him.
DEFENDERS
Steve Tully, age 30
I expect Tis to use wingbacks, with Tulls the first pick on the right hand side. It’s a very big season for him, having been brilliant last season and surprised everyone with how he adapted to League One. More is expected of him now, but you can’t fault his enthusiasm and his concentration is there too, so who's to say he won't get even better?
Scott Golbourne, age 22
The most likely first choice for left wingback. It’s an absolute bonus that he’s still here. He has obvious talent, although his poor crossing can be frustrating. He brings bags of energy, skill and inventiveness; he's a great footballer, but that final ball has to improve.
Joe Heath, age 21 (on loan at Hereford)
To be honest, I haven’t been too impressed with the little I’ve seen. He’s obviously got pedigree, but he doesn’t seem at all composed on the ball. Hopefully he’ll settle in and he probably will get his chance. Tis has taken a gamble on him and he doesn't get much wrong.
Billy Jones, age 27
It seems likely that we’ll start with three centre halves, with Jones on the left of the trio. I think he’d still be a lot more comfortable as a left back, and he initially looked uncomfortable in centre half, although much better against Bristol City. Hopefully he’ll grow into the new role. An important player.
Matt Taylor, age 28
I’m a bit worried about the defence this year and without Matt Taylor we really would be in trouble. He’s such a leader and reads the game to perfection. He’s not the fastest, but his anticipation is so good that it doesn't seem to matter. We're very lucky to have him.
Richard Duffy, age 24
The three centre-half set-up totally suits him. He’s a quality defender, he’ll get stuck in, he’ll fight for the cause and he reads the game well. I prefer him in a back three to his traditional right back role.
Troy Archibald-Henville, age 21
I’m not the biggest Troy fan. I think we panic bought him and I can’t believe we paid £50,000 for just an average defender. He did improve as the season went on, but his latest injury is a big setback. I do think we’re short of cover without him and we really need him to carry on improving when he returns.
Rob Edwards, age 37
I love Rob to bits, but he’s getting on a bit now and in the friendlies he’s been caught out for pace. Maybe it’s just a slow start to pre-season and, like last year, he’ll get back up to his usual high standard when required. At some point, his legs will let him down and for all his legendary qualities, he may struggle.
Scott Bennett, age 19
It’s just his second year as a professional. He looked a bit dodgy against Palace, so I’d rather not be relying on him in League One just yet. With the lack of cover at the back, Tis must rate him.
Jack Furzer, age 18
He’s stood out a bit in pre-season and may be in Tisdale’s plans as serviceable cover for the first team. He's strong for his age and looks like a good one.
MIDFIELDERS
David Noble, age 28
After all the hype, he’s everything we expected of him. He’s a big strong bloke with presence about him. He looks absolute class, with ball playing quality and vision to die for. He seems to be the complete midfielder that we’ve been lacking for decades, a perfect replacement - albeit a year late - for Matt Gill.
Ryan Harley, age 25 (sold to, and back on loan from, Swansea)
Playing alongside Noble will bring the best out of him, and the way he took his goal against Bristol City just carried on where he left off against Huddersfield. I love watching people who can play football brilliantly, and, although he doesn’t run around kicking people, he is a pleasure to watch. If he is going to go, then so be it - I'd rather get a good fee now than lose him on a free next year - but it would be a real shame not to have Ryan Harley in the City side.
Liam Sercombe, age 20
If Noble and Harley both play, there’s no room for last season’s dynamic duo of Sercombe and Dunne. I think Sercs may be the one who gets to start the season as he offers plenty going forward and is growing all the time into the team. He’s toughening up and he will score some wonder goals this season.
James Dunne, age 20
He may not start on the opening day, but he will definitely have a massive part to play this season. Very similar to Liam and has also proved he can score the goals, and is perhaps better cut out to do the dirty work that his twin. A great asset.
Bertie Cozic, age 32
It seems bizarre that he’s been given a new contract, but he’s another one who’s improved and has grown as City have grown. To be fair he’s all heart, and If asked he’ll try do a job for Paul Tisdale.
Chris Shephard, age 20
I'm bound to say he's a bit small, but Chris is very neat, tidy and well organised. Did well on loan at Salisbury and has looked good in pre-season.
Jake Thomson, age 21
He is, to my mind, an out-and-out winger, with all the ups and downs that goes with that. Oddly he did a defensive job against Bristol City, but I'm sure it's his pace and his good early delivery that we've signed him for. I'm looking forward to seeing him in League One action.
FORWARDS
Richard Logan, age 28
Tis has put faith in Logan in pre-season and indeed with his new contract. Logie has responded by looking lean and determined in the friendlies, doing all his usual good work very well. Look at the names below, though, and it's obvious that this is a big season for him.
Danny Nardiello, age 27
He looks like a proper League One striker. He’s full of energy, making runs off the ball and with the ball, and he knows where the back of the net is too. Could also be good for winning a penalty since he really does like to run at defenders. Very excited about him.
John O’Flynn, age 27
I haven’t seen too much of him in pre-season. He’s neither a big target man nor especially pacy, but he scored goals in League Two last season and we’ll be looking for him to step up.
Marcus Stewart, age 37
I really don’t know what part he’s going to play this year. I can’t see him playing too many games this season, but he may still serve a purpose for Tis as a link-man and somebody who helps dictate the pace of a game. As even the most distant Exiles knows, his days of being an out-and-out goal-getter are long behind him, now his role is a much more subtle one and we have to trust Marcus and Tis to know when and how to use Stewart for the good of the team.
Jamie Cureton, age 34
I think Tis wants to keep him and I’d like him to sign too. Obviously his age may go against him, but he is a prolific scorer, with 204 career goals, and in pre-season he’s looked very lively. He will score goals this season given the chance.
Ben Watson, age 24 (on loan at Bath City)
He’s been frustrated by injuries. Paul Tisdale obviously believes in him and he always scores goals in the reserves. He’s another one facing a big year in which he needs to make an impact, perhaps with a loan spell if he gets fully fit.
James Norwood, age 19
After a dream start last year, we haven’t seen so much of him. He looks like he’s got something different, with his pace and his tricks, and with Tis to help him develop he’s in the right place.
